What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is an ancient therapy that works with subtle energy flows in order to balance and revitalize the body. It is a relaxing, hands-on method used to activate the body’s own natural healing processes by stimulating various pressure points on the feet.
How Does it Work?
The body, like any finely working machine, needs to be maintained if expected to function properly. When an organ, gland, or other part of the body ceases to function as it should, other organs must work hard to overcompensate, and in time an imbalance within the body is created leading to both minor and severe health problems. Reflexology seeks to return the body to a state of equilibrium by stimulating the healing processes of the body through specific points on the feet.
Reflexology is based on the premise that there are reflex points on the feet that directly correspond to the organs, glands and limbs of the body via natural energy lines (also known as meridians or zone lines). There are 10 meridian lines, 5 on each side, that run vertically through the body and all of its organs, ending at both the hands and feet. By applying pressure to specific areas of the foot, currents of energy are sent up through the meridian lines, thus stimulating the corresponding organs and their systems. Once the organs are stimulated, blood flow increases resulting in a greater supply of oxygen and nutrients to the areas of need and the removal of toxins and wastes from the body. Blocks within the body that prevent the natural energy currents to flow are also released, allowing the body to begin the healing process and thus return to its natural balanced state.
Why the Feet?
By providing a direct connection to the earth, the feet are what ground both our own and the universal energies we receive. They are one of the most sensitive areas of the body because there are many nerve endings in the feet that are not hidden beneath thick layers of muscle. Because we also protect our feet with shoes, nerve ending remain tender and more sensitive to outside forces, thus rendering them extremely responsive to treatment. The areas of the foot that are sensitive to the touch help to indicate which organs and areas of the body are not functioning properly and require balancing.
Also because of gravitational forces, the toxins that circulate through the lymphatic systems often accumulate as crystalline deposits in the feet. It is important to break up these structures so that the toxins may be re-circulated and released from the body.
